Sony's S-Series Walkman Emerges; It's No iPod Killer

Sony's X-series Walkman (otherwise known as the OLED Walkman) has barely had time to make a splash in the US market, and already Sony is preparing to launch anoher music player. Based on some believable details leaked on Materiel's website (a French e-tailer), the new S-Series Walkman will arrive in 8GB (NWZ-S544) and 16GB (NWZ-S545) models, and while we doubt it'll compete with the heralded iPod touch, the built-in kickstand should make it suitable for movie watching, regardless.

The display has a 2.4" QVGA display, stereo speakers, a built-in FM tuner, a microphone, a rechargeable battery and a pretty crazy battery life figure. We're talking about 42 hours of audio playback or 6.5 hours for video. Also of note, the device looks to support a litany of file format, and the estimated $180 (8GB)/$211 (16GB) price tags don't seem all that outrageous. Of course, we've still got to wait for Sony to confirm this unit as real, but really, we're just waiting for the company to confirm a US price and release date.

Sony Launches Two New E-Book Readers

Sony today released a pair of new e-book readers the company hopes will help put it in a better position to do battle with Amazon's popular Kindle. As such, Sony also plans to reduce all new releases and best sellers at its e-book store from $11.99 down to $9.99 each.

On the hardware front, Sony's new Reader Pocket Edition weighs 7.76 ounces and sports a 5-inch display. There's enough memory to store 350 standard e-books, but no expansion slot for memory cards. Users can expect about two weeks of use before having to recharge the battery. The pocket-sized reader is available in navy blue, rose, and silver with an MSRP of $200.

As the name implies, Sony's new Reader Touch Edition ups the ante with a touchscreen display, which supports finger or stylus enabled note taking with the virtual keyboard. It comes with five adjustable font size and expansion slots for both Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD cards. This one comes in red, black, or silver with an MSRP set at $300.

A-DATA launches laptop-ready 2.5-inch 512GB XPG SSD at CeBIT

We heard way back in January that ASUS' S121 would be the world's first laptop with a 512GB SSD, and now we've reason to believe that very drive could be coming from the labs at A-DATA.

Here at CeBIT, the company has launched what it's claiming is the industry's highest capacity SSD (in the 2.5-inch form factor) with its 512GB XPG SSD. The drive promises to provide 230MB/s read and 160MB/s write rates while shuffling data around on the SATA II interface. As expected, it comes housed in a durable aluminum casing to shake off those occasional bumps and bruises, but there's sadly no word on price or availability. Next stop: 1TB. (Hopefully, anyway.)

Apple leaks 17-inch iMac for $899?

It's kind of funny when an Italian-language site breaks a wee bit of English-language based Apple news, but that's what happened when SetteB.it spotted a small mention of an $899 17-inch iMac for the education market on Apple's own Web site.

Currently, Apple is offering only iMacs in 20- and 24-inch screen sizes. The 20-inch model starts at $1,199, while the 24-incher starts at $1,499.

No word on when the "new" 17-incher will arrive (or if it's really new), but we'll await official confirmation from Apple.

Anybody interested? In this economy, I think that the sub-$1,000 market is a good spot for Apple to play in--especially when it comes to cash-strapped parents of student

World’s smallest music player

Apple has introduced its new iPod shuffle here, claimed by the manufacturer as the world's smallest music player at nearly half of the size of the previous model.

.
The third generation iPod, with a memory for about 1,000 songs and a new voice over feature which enables it to speak song titles, artists and playlist names, is significantly smaller than a AA battery.

'Imagine your music player talking to you, telling you your song titles, artists and playlist names,' said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPod and iPhone Product Marketing, on Thursday.

The iPod, which can speak 14 languages including English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish, comes in a new aluminium design with a built-in stainless steel clip that makes it ultra-wearable.

Apple launches smaller, 4-gigabyte iPod Shuffle

The $79 device has new feature that speaks the names of artists and songs

By Jessica Mintz

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Apple Inc. unveiled a minuscule new iPod Shuffle on Wednesday that takes its "smaller is better" mantra to a whole new level.

The third-generation Shuffle, a slim aluminum rectangle less than 2 inches (5 centimeters) long, takes up about half as much space as the previous version even as it doubles music storage space to 4 gigabytes. To achieve such a tiny form, Apple had to remove most of the buttons from the body of the $79 device and build them into the headphone cord instead.

"Smaller has tended to work very well for us," said Greg Joswiak, a marketing vice president at Apple.

The trade-off for a sub-$100 Shuffle has always been the lack of a screen to visually navigate through the music stored on the device. The first generation Shuffle, which launched in 2005, could hold about 240 songs, arguably not enough to warrant a screen.

Now that the device can carry 1,000 songs, Apple has come up with a way for people to identify the music they're listening to or find songs they want. A new feature called VoiceOver can, at the push of a button, speak the song and artist name or rattle off the list of custom mixes — called playlists — that the owner has loaded onto the device.

Here's how it works: As you synchronize a new Shuffle using an updated version of iTunes, your PC or Mac looks at each track and playlist and creates a small file of a computerized voice speaking the title, artist or playlist name. If a song is in Spanish or Chinese, say, the software figures this out and speaks in the appropriate language. Apple says the device can handle 14 languages.

The new Shuffle, which comes in silver or black aluminum with a shiny stainless steel clip, is set to go on sale Thursday. Joswiak said Apple's own earphones will be the only option for early buyers, but that other companies plan to make compatible headphones as well as adapters for regular headphones.

By Hilbert Hagedoorn

You know, Elecom MF-SU2 Flash Drives Could Probably Be Smaller Were It Not For The USB Connector. Here’s the perfect accessory for those of you using a netbook, particularly with a small SSD hard drive. The diminutive MF-SU2 series of USB flash drives from Elecom are barely visible when connected to one of your laptop’s USB ports, but provide either 4 or 8GB of extra storage. They also come with a piece of security software known as PASS (Password Authentication Security System) that allows you to access the drive’s secure contents without having to type a password on your own PC.

I’m not sure when they’ll be available or for how much, but you’ll have your choice of black, blue, pink and white colors.

However, if you are not familiar with the features that are currently so this trend, ASUS is providing keyboard and mouse that is designed to match the PC unit itself. Unfortunately peranti second input is a little too small and a bit less comfortable when operated.

Fortunately ASUS still provide enough free space on your hard disk that is used (160GB).

Clearwire to produce portable WiMAX / WiFi router

by : Darren Murph,
We can't say a device such as this was inevitable or anything, but given how limited the adoption of WiMAX has been thus far in America, it's definitely a win for everyone involved. According to Sidecut Reports, Clearwire will soon unveil a portable WiMAX / WiFi router built by Cradlepoint (prototype pictured), which will utilize a Motorola WiMAX USB stick to enable WiFi-capable devices to gather 'round and surf on the delightfully speedy WiMAX superhighway. In other words, non-WiMAX handsets that have WiFi modules can tap into the WiMAX network (if they're in a lit locale, that is) via this device, which -- if we may say so ourselves -- is a brilliant design move. There's no word yet on when the box will ship nor how pricey it'll be, but this could be just the thing you've been looking for to replace that painfully expensive cable modem at home.

VAIO P, now with more Windows 7

by Paul Miller
We just couldn't help ourselves, and put this Windows 7 .iso we had lying around exactly where it belongs: on Sony's VAIO P. After mucking around on "the internet" figuring out the best way to install it, we ended up going the lazy route and dragging / dropping the plain files onto a folder on a USB drive, hitting setup.exe and watching the installer do its magic -- and it worked flawlessly! We weren't timing it or anything, but we'd say 45 minutes or so is a good guesstimate for the install. A few thoughts:
  • It boots fast! Not that Vista was that bad on the boot front, but we're pretty happy with this.
  • No Aero. That's to be expected, but the lack of transparency and visual effects makes the OS look quite a bit different than most of the screenshots out there.
  • It's very responsive. To be honest, a lot of that could be from the fact that this is a clean install, minus all the crap Sony loads on. Still, we're very happy for the start menu to pop open instantly, windows to redraw like God intended... it's pretty great.
  • Browsing is 100% better. Internet Explorer pops open in a flash, and pages load in times nearly on comparison with "real" computers. Also, scrolling is ultra smooth, whereas with Vista it was stuttery all the way down.
  • There's a lot more to explore. We've just scratched the surface, but we love what we've seen so far.
Update: both videos are after the break!

Update 2: for those who've asked: yes, the webcam works, and no, we haven't had any luck getting Aero up and running, though we have the video drivers loaded -- we're not saying it's impossible, in fact, it's likely very possible, since plenty of other similarly specced netbooks can pull it off, but it's just not happening for us just yet.
