Gadget of the Week: BlackBerry Storm

Tech Central: What's wrong with the BlackBerry Bold?

WHAT IS IT? A chunky BlackBerry smartphone with top-class e-mail capabilities and a large screen for video playback. BlackBerry is well ahead of the competition when it comes to push e-mail (the technology that forwards your mail to you quickly without you having to ask for it) but has found it hard to produce a killer mobile. This is partly because of the physical problem of having to accommodate a usable keypad within the confines of a slim handset. The Storm gets over that, though, as, for the first time on a BlackBerry, it uses a virtual keypad on the touchscreen, which clicks as you press each key. The pad is fast and reliable and has decent error correction, and there is a clever virtual mouse pointer to help select small on-screen details.

SHOULD I BUY ONE? If you’re wary of touchscreen gizmos, be reassured that this one is easy to use, although it’s hefty. On preorder now, exclusive to Vodafone. (
